Inspired by Stuart Davis

Stuart Davis (December 7, 1892 – June 24, 1964), was an early American modernist painter. He was well known for his jazz-influenced, proto pop art paintings of the 1940s and 1950s, bold, brash, and colorful, as well as his ashcan pictures in the early years of the 20th century. source

When I was in college, I had to recreate a painting of my choice. After about a week of research and digging through the many art books assigned to us at the time, I found Stuart Davis. I researched his work and the more I researched, the more I fell in love with his story and his style. His choice of color stood out to me and as a woman who loves music, his jazz-influences strokes directly inspired me. I chose 'Blips and Ifs' as my painting to recreate and found a style that I really loved. Interestingly enough, this painting inspired me more in my graphic design than in my painting.

Lately, I've been exploring new design styles and ended up back at Stuart Davis. I wanted to start creating different design layers that I could expand upon and have been loving the process. My hope is to take all of my inspiration and create a digital based body of work with it.

I decided to take it back to the days of college, give myself some homework and start researching Stuart Davis again. Revisiting his work and story got me re-inspired and a more excited to continue building on this inspiration and creating more layers and figuring out how they will work together and be produced a cohesive piece of digital art and then, maybe a full body of work.

Thank you Stuart Davis for your work, your inspiration and the inspiration you have given me and many other artists in the world!
